Beauty - Is It Really Only Skin Deep?

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By Willie Jones We are in the age of cosmetology, plastic surgery, implants and a constant barrage from TV and magazines that want to sell us beauty and weight loss products. It is an enormously profitable industry that keeps us spellbound for the next new thing that will take away our wrinkles or firm our skin or help us lose weight. Unfortunately society all over the world from the deepest, most remote areas of the planet to modern society will judge you by how you look. It is true! We all do it, some more than others. When you are walking through a mall or standing in line somewhere you are assessing people around you. When we are looking for a job we dress to impress. When we go out for an evening we dress to impress. Women usually pay more attention to detail then men. But there is more to beauty then cosmetics and clothes. If you are very healthy looking then you are more likely to give a good impression. If you are a good listener, helpful or witty and cheerful, people are more likely to want to be around you. Cosmetics and clothing can definitely help but I suggest starting from the inside out. 1) Get plenty of sleep. This is a must. You cannot function properly when you are tired and it will show on your face. If you have a problem with getting enough sleep then you need to investigate the cause and handle it accordingly. 2) Drink plenty of water. Most people are semi dehydrated and dont get enough water daily. 3) Eat healthy food. Give up the junk and sugar foods. Your metabolism will be working better if you eat regular healthy meals. 4) You may want to consider taking supplements to get the vitamins and minerals your body needs. 5) Exercise. Our bodies need to move. We have become somewhat of a couch potato society. Have you noticed that when you are lazy you are less likely to want to get up and do anything? Exercising 30 minutes three times a week should help you lose weight and keep healthy. 6) Manicures and pedicures and keeping your body clean will keep you healthy and will be appreciated by others. 7) Keep up with the times on fashion. You dont want the outdated look. 8) Dress for your age. At 12 you dont need to look 20, or if your 50, you dont need to look 18. Be well dressed for your age. 9) If you need help with hair and makeup, find an expert to help you with that. 10) And finally, smile. No one really cares to be near Mr. or Mrs. Grumpy. Some people naturally do all or most of these things, but if you arent one of them then look at what would motivate you to do this. Do you have a spouse you want to look good for? Are you single and want to attract someone? Do you have children or grandchildren you want to be healthier and be a good role model for? There is an awesome motivational poster that inspired me to write about this subject. Get healthy, and be happy. Willie Jones Willie is a freelance writer, researcher, floral designer, and artist. Can You Stoke Your Metabolism?

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By R.T. Bucher Have you ever had one of those overbearing wafer like friends thatconstantly stuffed their face? My brother is one of those types. He is constantly eating and somehow he never gains an ounce. On the other hand is my sister, she is clinically obese, but eats only once or twice a day. The main reason for this is the metabolism rates for both aredifferent. They may have the same DNA, but their metabolisms ratesdeviate greatly. In order to lose weight, you must be able to stoke your metabolism. I want you to think of your metabolism as a small fire. You donot keep a small fire lit by throwing huge logs on it once or twice a day. You continually need to keep feeding it kindling and small logs. The fire maintained in the later fashion burns strong and bright all day. You want to lose weight? You have to eat 5-6 small meals a day. I am not referring to drivingthrough Burger King six times a day. I am referring to small mealseaten every 2-3 hours. A small meal consists of a protein source and hopefully a fibersource. You can also alternate a complex carbohydrate. Here is how I start each day. (6:00 am) I consume 5 egg whites, 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal(good fiber). Midmorning snack (9:00 am) Protein shake or bar. Noon Roast Beef on whole grain bread, an apple, low fat cottage cheese. Midday snack (3:00 pm) Boiled egg whites or tuna fish packet. Supper(6:00 pm) Chicken breast or fish, broccoli or asparagus, sometimes rice. My example is just that an example. I would hope you could mix and match your own food sources. It is ultra important that you do not get stuck in a food rut. Giving yourself multiple food choices is very important. You do not want to keep eating the same things repeatedly. I would even have rewards at the end of the day. I suggest for the first two weeks of any diet plan to reward yourself at the end of the day. Have a piece of chocolate or a glass of wine. I am a big believer in rewarding the brain, the brain needs feed back and when you allow yourself simple pleasure. The brain responds in kind. Always think of your metabolism as a small fire that you need to keep lit all day. Look, for different ways to shake the metabolism up. Throw it a curve ball once a week and eat what you want. It will probably speed it up even more. Keeping track of your metabolism and fueling it properly will lead to explosive weight loss. - R.T. Bucher R.T. What Sort of College Savings Programs Are Offered by the US Government or States?

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Anubha Shyam College education in the United State is becoming excessively expensive with each passing day. Various kinds of federal and non-federal financial aids are available for students However, not only are they difficult to obtain, but also they are often not enough to abbreviate the gap in the cost of education. In attempt to make higher education easily accessible to more Americans, the federal and state governments have developed qualified tuition programs, commonly known as 529 programs. There are two types of 529 programs; first, prepaid tuition plan and second, college savings program. Prepaid tuition plan allows the parents and grandparents to lock in tuition in the current tuition rates, that is, prevalent in recognized public colleges and universities. At present, the state government operates these plans. Prepaid tuition plans not only provide better rate of return on investment, but also involve absolutely no risk to the principal. College saving programs allow parents to make contributions to an account, which has been specifically created to pay for the beneficiarys qualified higher education expenses as books, tuition fees, supplies and boarding. College savings programs are usually associated with investment risks, that is, their value fluctuate according to the market conditions and the investment strategy chosen. Nowadays, college savings programs for states are typically managed by mutual fund companies. Hence, mutual funds are the most prevalent investment vehicles in these programs. Each state college savings program provides different investment options, and all these options require the creation of portfolio. The portfolio may either contain a wide assortment of investment strategies, or fixed number shares and bonds, whose composition automatically changes with time. The state governments provide various kinds of tax benefits and incentives on college savings programs. The money in these programs grows tax-deferred, and if it is withdrawn for qualified higher education expenses, then it is tax-free. Moreover, college savings programs receive favorable treatment in student-financial-aid calculations. Every state provides a variety of college savings programs, and no two programs are exactly alike. Hence, it would be worthwhile to conduct some research before selecting a particular program. A financial aid advisor can help you to find the best college savings program that will efficiently fulfill all your requirements. Some of the best college savings programs are as follows: New Yorks 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan Michigan Education Savings Program Maryland College Investment Plan Future Scholar, South Carolina The Education Plan, New Mexico Anubha is studying computers, and also works as a part-time freelance copywriter. How to Avoid Being Stopped on Suspicion of Drunk Driving

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Lawrence Taylor If you’re sober, then you’ve got nothing to worry about, right? Not necessarily. The problem with being singled out of traffic as a possible DUI is that the officer has already formed certain expectations: He is psychologically predisposed to “see” what he expects to see — and he expects to see an inebriated person behind the wheel. So reddish eyes from fatigue, alcohol on the breath from a single drink, and nervous fumbling with your wallet trying to get your driver’s license will be seen as corraborating these suspicions. And then your future is going to depend upon performing well on field sobriety tests — tests which are notoriously difficult for anyone to pass. So how do you avoid being pulled over in the first place? Well, it helps to know exactly what the police are looking for. Most of them have been taught what driving symptoms indicate the relative probability that the driver is intoxicated. This training is usually based upon research conducted by the federal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and reproduced in a booklet intended primarily for law enforcement, “Guide for Detecting Drunk Drivers at Night”. The booklet contains a “DUI Detection Guide”, which identifies the 19 most common and reliable initial indicators of drunk driving - along with the percentage probability that the driver exhibiting the symptom is, in fact, under the influence. The following is a list of the symptoms and the probability of intoxication. Thus, for example, the research indicates that “the chances are 65 out of 100″ that a driver who is making a wide turn or straddling a lane line has a blood-alcohol concentration above the legal limit. - Turning with Wide Radius 65 - Straddling Center or Lane Marker 65 - Appearing to be Drunk 60 - Almost Striking Object or Vehicle 60 - Weaving 60 - Driving on Other Than Designated Roadway 55 - Swerving 55 - Slow Speed (more than 10 miles per hour below limit) 50 - Stopping (without cause) in Traffic Lane 50 - Drifting 50 - Following too closely 45 - Tires on Center or Lane Marker 45 - Braking Erratically 45 - Driving Into Opposing or Crossing Traffic 45 - Signaling Inconsistent with Driving Actions 40 - Stopping Inappropriately (other than in lane) 35 - Turning Abruptly or Illegally 35 - Accelerating or Decelerating Rapidly 30 - Headlights Off 30 The NHTSA research indicates that symptoms are rarely seen in isolation; officers usually see a number of driving symptoms before pulling the suspect over. And the chances of a driver being intoxicated when multiple symptoms are observed can also be calculated: “When two or more cues are seen, add 10 to the highest value among the cues observed.” For example, if the subject is observed to be weaving (60) and following too closely (45), there are 70 chances out of 100 that his blood-alcohol is above the legal limit. Speeding, incidentally, is not a symptom of DUI. Because of the need for quicker judgment and reflexes, it may actually indicate sobriety. You may get stopped for speeding, but at least you won’t have the officer approaching your car expecting to make a DUI arrest. So if you’re driving home late some night, keep in mind what the police are looking for — and drive accordingly. Put Your Lawn On a Diet

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Doug Green Those wonderful green lawns many homeowners care about so much can be made much more healthy if we put them on a diet. Overfeeding causes as many problems with lawns as it does with people. Fat lawns are not healthy lawns. Rather than go on about this problem, let me simply tell you about the research at the University of Guelph. Researcher Christopher Hallfound there was a way to promote health in the lawn by the frequency of the fertilizer application and the amount of fertilizer applied. According the Hall, fertilizer for lawns should be applied three times per year. One quarter of the fertilizer being applied should be applied in early summer, (not early spring) when the ground warms up and the grass is beginning to really grow. Another quarter is applied in late summer, around the middle of August when the fall rains are promoting growth, and the last half of the fertilizer is applied at the end of November to fatten up the roots for winter survival. This application rate was found to create a much denser turf than applications at other times all species and cultivars of grass. It was particularly effective on perennial rye grass and tall fescues. The next question is how much food does the lawn need? Chris Hall at Guelph found that the turf did better if only 2 pounds of Nitrogen per 1000 square feet was used over the whole season. From the above paragraph, it can be seen that 1/4 pound is applied in early summer, 1/4 pound in late summer and 1 full pound in late November for the healthiest, thickest lawn. Overfeeding produces thatch and weakened grass that is susceptible to pests and disease. It is also more costly. So, put your lawn on a diet for a better lawn. What are the Celexa Side Effects and are there Alternatives?

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mike_Stevens] Mike Stevens Although it is one of the most commonly prescribed antidepressant medications, Celexa side effects can be quite serious. As such it is important to be aware of what health risks are involved, as well as what your alternatives are when it comes to treating depression. Some of the more common side effects of Celexa include migraines, amnesia, increased flatulence and saliva production, thirst, dry eyes and dehydration among others. In some cases, this antidepressant actually causes worse depression. When using Celexa weight gain is one of the primary concerns. As with many antidepressants, this one inhibits the metabolism, leading to a rise in weight gain. Apart from obesity, there are far more dangerous side effects Celexa has also been linked to, including a decrease in heart rate, cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular issues such as arrhythmia, tachycardia and atrial fibrillation during its use. Other dangerous side effects Celexa may cause include hypertension, or a significant rise in blood pressure, difficulty controlling body movements, gastritis and ulcers, coagulation problems in the blood, and catatonia. In the case of some patients using Celexa weight gain was not the problem, but rather weight loss. Although some of these are quite rare, they are still potential complications, and even if it’s one in ten thousand, do you want to be that one? Due to the harm these drugs can cause, many people turn to alternative depression treatments to avoid Celexa side effects. There are many natural remedies available, including herbal supplements with extracts, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that can improve your mood and relieve stress and anxiety. They can also promote general wellness and help treat other existing conditions at the same time. Since today’s diets almost never include all the nutrients we need to keep our bodies balanced, supplements can be a good alternative. Although you can buy a single ingredient, such as ginkgo biloba (which dilates blood vessels, increases blood circulation in the brain and enhances cerebral function) or valerian extract (a natural sedative that treats sleep disorders commonly caused by mood disorders), research shows that a more comprehensive supplement with multiple ingredients can offer more health benefits. With a natural supplement with specific ingredients blended to nourish the brain, you can avoid Celexa side effects and those of other antidepressants. You are also addressing the condition head on, rather than masking it temporarily as [http://beat-your-depression.com/depression_medicine.html] depression medicine does. If you do suffer from depression, be sure to consult your physician before deciding on any treatment options for your condition. Although a natural alternative to avoid dangerous side effects Celexa may cause sounds like a good idea, your doctor may decide that a prescription medication is a better option. Mike Stevens has been studying the mood disorders for years, and has written many articles on the subject. He is a regular contributor to the [http://beat-your-depression.com] Celexa side effects section of [http://www.beat-your-depression.com] http://www.beat-your-depression.com, a site discussing conventional and alternative ways to treat depression and related mood disorders. Massage Cupping - A Unique Therapy

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

By Christopher Twilley Although it has its roots in ancient Chinese medicine, massage cupping is experiencing a resurgence of popularity in todays health-conscious society. Cupping uses suction and negative pressure to drain excess fluids and toxins, loosen adhesions, lift connective tissue, and bring blood flow to stagnant skin and muscles. This technique intensifies the therapeutic effects of massage and other body treatments. Cupping is accomplished by depressurizing glass or bamboo cups of various sizes. The therapist lights an alcohol-soaked cotton ball and places the flame briefly inside the cup; the cup is then quickly placed on the clients body. The flame removes the air from the cup, creating a vacuum. This vacuum creates negative pressure on the skin and tissue, pulling it slightly into the cup. This action creates a sensation of light pressure on the skin and has a sedating effect on the nervous system, very similar to traditional massage. A stronger suction will mimic the rolling action of a deep tissue massage. The movement may be long and draining or circular and stimulating for stubborn knots and areas of rigid tissue. The skin will turn very red with stronger cupping, indicating that the circulation has been brought to the surface. This increased local blood supply will bring nourishment to the muscles and skin and allow for toxins to be carried away via the circulatory system. The application of analgesics and essential oil blends immediately following will facilitate the absorption of the product deep into the tissue. The sensation of massage cupping is pleasant and unique. Most clients describe a deep warmth and a tingling sensation long after the treatment has ended. Massage cupping is recommended for all conditions for which a patient might seek massage therapy (muscle tension, headaches, neuralgia, high blood pressure, anxiety, and fatigue) and is especially effective for tightness of the iliotibial (IT) band and chronic pain, tightness, and spasm of the middle to lower back. I have found this technique particularly useful for clients who are unable to withstand the discomfort sometimes associated with deep tissue massage, thereby allowing them to reap the same benefits. Massage cupping is yet another natural and simple technique that offers many benefits. It has been used by European, Middle Eastern, and Asian cultures for thousands of years as an effective form of treatment. Whether used alone or in combination with other therapies, massage cupping offers productive and noticeable results for my clients. My Practice Christopher Twilley graduated from the Baltimore School of Massage in 2003. He received his certification through the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. He is a licensed Massage Therapist in the state of Maryland and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association. He received his introductory training in Shiatsu at the International School of Shiatsu in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and mentored for over a year under Shiatsu Shin Tai practitioner Michael Wohlfarth of Bowie, Maryland. Christopher is a certified Reiki Master. He received this training, as well as training in advanced energetic techniques, through Reiki Master Dawn Fleming. He received his pregnancy massage training through Claire Marie Miller’s “Nurturing the Mother,” a pre- and peri-natal massage program. Most Common Foodborne Illness

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

By Andrew Krause Foodborne illness are one of the leading causes of emergency room visits in the United States, and account for millions of dollars in expenses and thousands of days of lost work time every year. What are some of the most common bugs? Campylobacter is a bacterial pathogen that causes fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. It is the most commonly identified bacterial cause of diarrheal illness in the world. These bacteria live in the intestines of healthy birds, and most raw poultry meat has Campylobacter on it. Eating undercooked chicken or other food that has been contaminated with juices dripping from raw chicken is the most frequent source of this infection. E. coli is a bacterial pathogen that has a reservoir in cattle and other similar animals. Human illness typically follows consumption of food or water that has been contaminated with microscopic amounts of cow feces. The illness it causes is often a severe and bloody diarrhea and painful abdominal cramps, without much fever. In 3 percent to 5 percent of cases, a complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) can occur several weeks after the initial symptoms. This severe complication includes temporary anemia, profuse bleeding and kidney failure. Norwalk virus is an extremely common cause of foodborne illness, though it is rarely diagnosed, because the laboratory test is not widely available. It causes an acute gastrointestinal illness, usually with more vomiting than diarrhea, that resolves within two days. Unlike many foodborne pathogens that have animal reservoirs, it is believed that Norwalk-like viruses spread primarily from one infected person to another. Infected kitchen workers can contaminate a salad or sandwich as they prepare it, if they have the virus on their hands. Infected fishermen have contaminated oysters as they harvested them. Salmonella is another bacterium that is widespread in the intestines of birds, reptiles and mammals. It can spread to humans via a variety of different foods of animal origin. The illness it causes, salmonellosis, typically includes fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In persons with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, it can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections. As you can see, foodborne illness are nothing to fool around with. If you suspect you have one, get medical help immediately! How to Grow Globe Artichokes

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

By Terry Blackburn There are two types of artichoke, Globe and Jerusalem. The globe is a perennial with a thistle-like head complete with scales surrounding a fleshy frond or heart, which is the part with the most flavour. The Jerusalem artichoke is grown for its tubers, which are produced in the soil like potatoes. This too is a perennial, though is more conveniently grown by digging up the tubers each season and replanting the best specimens the following year, as in the case of potatoes. Soil Preparation The soil must be well drained to grow artichokes; it should be moist in the summer but dry in the winter. They require a sunny position for the unopened flower heads have more flavour when they are grown in full sun. A sheltered position is also required as the flower stems grow tall and are easily blown over. In the autumn dig the ground over to a spades depth, incorporating manure and some well-rotted compost at the rate of a bucketful to the sq. yd. then leave the ground rough to over winter. Fork the ground level in spring, adding fish manure at a rate of 3 oz. (76mm) to the sq. yd. This dressing should be repeated each year in March or early April. Planting The plants should be purchased from a reliable nurseryman; you can later increase your stock plants by severing the side growths or suckers, which will later develop at the base of each plant. These should be cut from the parent plant when they are about 9 in. (228mm) long, taking care that there is a part of the old plants root at base. Plant the new shoots in April in rows 3 ft (90cm) apart, allowing 3 ft. (90cm) between the plants. If you garden in the North then you should take your suckers during November and pot them up individually into 6 in. (152mm) pots, protect them from frost until the following May, when they can be re-planted into the bed. General Care Keep down the weeds, gently hoeing between the plants reducing the surrounding soil to a fine dust to about in. (12mm) layer of loose soil over the surface of the ground. If the artichokes are not growing sturdily by June, top dress with dried blood to promote better growth. When autumn arrives the plants should be given some protection against the on coming winter frosts. Straw is excellent for this purpose and it should be laid over each plant and a net drawn over the top and secured will keep the straw in place. If the straw becomes too wet, it should be replaced at intervals throughout the winter. Artichoke plants can last for as long as 12 years or more though it is good practise to replace the plants after 5 or 6 years to continue vitality and vigour in your stock. Harvesting The flower heads are not produced the first year, in the early summer of the second year, the large thistle-like heads which develop should be cut just before they open. Cut the main head, known as the king head, first. Secondary growths will then develop, each of which will produce a tender flower head. These are cut when they are the size of a large hens egg. For better flavour, cut no more than 1 hour before you intend to cook them. Terry Blackburn. Internet Marketing Consultant, living in South Shields in the North-East of England.
