How I Came Back From Ten Years Of Anxiety And Panic To Fully Recover

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Paul Bywater The most common question I have been asked over the years is why do I feel so strange and detached from the outside world. Here is a chatper on this particualr symptom from a book I wrote on the whole Anxiety/Panic subject. Depersonalisation In the process of writing this book I covered the feeling of detachment from oneself, otherwise known as depersonalisation: an emotional disorder in which there is loss of contact with your own personal reality accompanied by feelings of unreality and strangeness, also a sensation of ones environment looking or feeling strange and unusual. This one question kept coming up more and more as I was writing this book, so I decided to add an extra chapter on this annoying, yet harmless, symptom. D.P., as I will refer to it, is a common and understandable offshoot of the anxiety condition. I can also tell you that it is in no way a mental illness. It is not serious or harmful in any way and has a totally logical explanation. It is temporary and, with patience and understanding, eventually passes like any other symptom. The key to recovering from this feeling of detachment is to surrender to this strange feeling, to pay it no respect and realise it is just the product of an over-tired mind, fatigued by your constant worrying thoughts and the constant checking in to how you feel. This symptom relies on your fear of it to keep it alive. When people are caught up in the worry cycle, they begin to think deeply and constantly. They study themselves from deep within, checking in and focusing on their symptoms. They may even wake in the morning only to continue this habit, How do I feel this morning? I wonder if I will be able to get through today”. Whats this new sensation I feel?” This may go on all day, exhausting their already tired mind further. This constant checking in and constant assessing of their symptoms then becomes a habit, but like all other habits this one can also be changed. All this worry is bound to make your mind feel dull and unresponsive. Is it any wonder you have come to feel so distanced from your surroundings? Is it any wonder you find it so hard to concentrate? Some people, when studying for exams for hours on end, get to the point where they can no longer take information in, so they take a break and carry on the day after. For you, there are no breaks and no time outs. As I have already mentioned earlier, your body has a safety mechanism that protects it from all this worry and slows the mind down to safeguard itself. It takes a step back from this onslaught, which can then produce your feelings of detachment and the world around you may become hazy or out of focus. Once you understand this symptom as being caused by an over-tired mind, exhausted through worry, that you are not going mad and these feelings cant harm you in any way, it makes sense. With the fear factor taken out of this symptom, it can start to hold less power over you and affect you less than it did before. Although still annoying, you now know why you feel these feelings. Once you learn to accept them and stop adding worrying thoughts to the mix, this is another symptom that you will be able to overcome in time. Taking a step back and giving up the worrying thoughts, gives your mind the chance to rest, rejuvenate and refresh. When it happened to me, I recognised and understood what was causing it. I realised that I was checking in and worrying about it and I did fear this sensation, so I just stopped doing it. I also learnt to get busier and stop brooding on this and other symptoms. Being active gives you another focus. Having too much time on your hands can open the door to too much needless thinking. With less worry and fear of this harmless but upsetting symptom, I was eventually able to overcome it. It merely became a nuisance and because I knew the reason for its existence, it no longer held any power over me. When a worry or fear loses its importance, it loses its power and that is why it is essential to realise these symptoms are neither harmful nor serious. Gradually, without all the checking in and worrying, this symptom that so dominated my life began to diminish and eventually disappeared completely. This symptom is like any other all symptoms are still being fuelled by your fear of them. As long as the fear continues, so will the symptoms. When we start to understand why we feel like we do, we automatically fear them less and they start to lose their edge and importance, this is when symptoms gradually start to fade. What We Talk About When We Talk About Mediation

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Charles Parselle Mediation is older than any legal system. The great Bacon wrote the praises of mediation nearly four hundred years ago, in one of his celebrated Essays: It is generally better to deal by speech than by letter, and by the mediation of a third, than by a mans self . . . in all negotiations of difficulty, a man must not look to sow and reap at once, but must prepare business, and so ripen by degrees. Francis Bacon (1561-1626) To mediate means: 1. To bring about (an agreement, peace, etc.), as an intermediary between parties by compromise, reconciliation, removal of misunderstanding, etc. 2. To settle (disputes, strikes, etc.), as an intermediary between parties: reconcile. 3. To effect (a result) or convey (a message, gift, etc.), by or as by an intermediary. 4. To act between parties to effect an agreement, compromise, or reconciliation. 5. To occupy an intermediate place or position. 6. Acting through, dependent on, or involving an intermediate agency; not direct or immediate. Mediation means: 1. Action in mediating between parties, as to effect an agreement or reconciliation. 2. International law, an attempt to effect a peaceful settlement between disputing nations through the friendly good offices of another power. Synonym(s): 1. Mediation, arbitration designate processes for bringing about agreement for a reconciliation between opponents in a dispute. Mediation implies deliberation that results in solutions that may or may not be accepted by the contending parties: mediation settled the strike. Arbitration involves a more formal deliberation, it being understood that the results will be binding on the contending parties: the strike was settled only after arbitration. (All definitions are reproduced from Websters Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language) Websters synonyms tend to confuse mediation with arbitration. Arbitration is designed to produce a result with a winner and a loser; it is a not a process for bringing about agreement for a reconciliation. Mediation unlike arbitration is not designed to produce winners and losers, but precisely a reconciliation of differences. Mediation attempts to be win-win. They are both alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, but one bears little resemblance to the other. Webster does accurately state the role of mediator as intermediary between parties to a dispute. Mediation is as old as civilization and pre-dates anything resembling legal process. The mediator is a go-between, who passes busily from party to party in an attempt to assist them reconcile their differences. In late classical Athens, the comedies of Menander often featured a wily slave who carried messages, and in the country house farces beloved of Victorian audiences, the chambermaid often served as an intermediary between two lovers. The Aztecs, who had no written language, used messengers or intermediaries to convey exact messages of outstanding length. Carrier pigeons have been used to carry messages for hundreds of years, and can navigate over endless uncharted miles, but so far no carrier pigeon has become a mediator. Though a mediator may lack some of the abilities of a carrier pigeon, she can and does carry messages, but that is the least of her functions. She is a trained professional who has the skills to overcome numerous obstacles, the perseverance to continue the process despite all impulses of the parties to end it, and who is able at length to bring them to closure of the particular dispute despite their differences, and sometimes achieve a full reconciliation. Such results are not easily achieved, and such skills are not easily learned. The textbooks say that there are three ways to mediate, or three types of mediator. These are 1) evaluative 2) facilitative 3) transformative. An evaluative mediator is one who is prepared to express an opinion as to the likely outcome of a dispute. Parties who seek an evaluative mediator will often choose a retired judge. The prerequisite for giving an evaluation is subject matter expertise. Judges, who have decided hundreds or thousands of cases, or who have observed hundreds of juries reaching a verdict, are often trusted by parties to render an evaluation, which the parties may find useful in coming to a decision about their particular dispute. However, not only retired judges are used for the purpose of evaluation. Persons engaged in a construction dispute will often go to an engineer, general contractor, or other person with subject matter expertise. A facilitative mediator is one who stresses that the function of his job is to enable, or facilitate, parties to communicate and negotiate with each other, in order to arrive at their own evaluation and resolution. A facilitative mediator may consider it unethical to render an opinion. The facilitative style may require greater patience and skill in enabling parties to craft their own resolution, than may be necessary for an evaluative mediator. Parties may prefer an evaluative mediator when they wish to resolve their dispute and proceed on their separate ways. Facilitative mediation may be more desirable where the parties wish to, or must, engage in a continuing relationship with each other, so that the particular dispute is merely a roadblock that needs to be overcome in order to enable that continuing relationship. Many mediators are perfectly willing to be either evaluative or facilitative, as the situation demands. The third type of mediator is called transformative, and the goal of transformative mediation is far bolder, and more like therapy, than the goal of traditional, evaluative or facilitative mediation. Transformation suggests that the goal is to affect a transformation, in the parties themselves, and in their relationship. Transformation means (1) act or process of transforming; state of being transformed. (2) Change in form, appearance, nature, or character. (3) Theatrical, a seemingly miraculous change in the appearance of scenery or actors in view of the audience. In Mediating Dangerously, (2001) Kenneth Cloke, a pioneer of transformational mediations, writes: The transformational or elicitive model of mediation views conflict as something to be learned from, and the parties as ready for introspection and fundamental change. The mediator becomes an empathetic yet honest agent, whose role is to elicit recognition and empower the parties to solve their own problems. Personally I use a modified version of the transformational model, based a more intuitive, integrative, dangerous approach to mediation. I neither direct nor stand apart from the conflict, but interact with the parties and reflect on possibilities, based on intuitive assessments at the time. The function of a mediator is to enable change. A mediator is a catalyst whose presence and skills enable change. The type of change so enabled is the most difficult of all change of mind. Change is needed for movement to occur. Movement is needed for the disputants to approach each other. The disputants must approach each other for negotiation to occur. Negotiation must occur for solutions to be explored. Solutions must be explored for the disputants to achieve a resolution that satisfies competing interests. At some level, disputants cherish their dispute, and the emotions and attitudes that accompany it they want to lay down the burden yet are reluctant to do so. They want the satisfaction that accompanies winning. They want not merely to win; they want to other side to lose, and preferably be manifestly seen to lose. When an outsider hears both sides of a conflict, she may get the impression that the disputants are in illusion, the competing illusions colliding in conflict. One or both of them has got it wrong. If both sides are brought to share roughly the same reality, or view of the case, they settle. This is called by many colloquial expressions, like getting into the same ballpark, getting into the same zip code, etc. The presence and skills of the mediator tilt the balance in favor of reality, rationality, and closure. The three bedrock principles by which mediation is conducted are (1) confidentiality (2) voluntary participation and (3) party control of outcome. Charles B. Parselle is a California mediator, arbitrator and attorney. He graduated from Oxford University, then joined the California Bar in 1983. His articles are regularly published in legal magazines, such as The Daily Journal, Bar Notes and Mediate.com. Wedding Planning, Complete Guide How to Avoid the Stress

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Gordon Petten Although a wedding is supposed to be one of the most joyous days of your life, many couples find themselves stressing out at the last minute as they scramble to get everything completed in time for the ceremony. Everyone wants their wedding day to be perfect, but the downside of this is that couples often scrutinize over trivial decisions and waste a lot of time. Hence, when it is time for the ceremony, there are often many things that still need to be completed. A wedding is not supposed to be stressful and the following tips in the guide below should help to minimize stress. The first thing you need to do is start early. You do not want to procrastinate planning a wedding because if you do, you are setting yourself up for failure. Make sure that you have the essentials, a venue, banquet hall, dress and tuxedo, food, and various other items booked well in advance to make sure that they will be available on your wedding day. The next thing you need to do is to stay organized and one of the best ways to do this is by utilizing the checklist. A list will help you organize your thoughts and get them on paper so you do not forget them. Establish everything you need to get done and one by one complete all tasks on the list so that you know you will be prepared when your wedding day finally rolls around. Make sure to complete the larger tasks, like booking a chef and venue for your wedding first, and then breeze through the rest of the items on the checklist. The final tip that will help make your wedding day as stress free as possible is to not scrutinize and analyze every little decision as many couples tend to do. In short, “dont sweat the small stuff.” If you like certain tablecloths and invitations, use them and don’t waste time searching through hundreds of other invitation cards or napkin options so you can spend more time focusing on the more important aspects of a wedding. If you follow the three tips above and make sure to get everything completed as early as possible, your wedding day should be a much more enjoyable ceremony with les stress and more joy than if you are awake the night before trying to make sure that you have completed everything. Newsletters are Marketing Machines!

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Wendy Maynard Is your business publishing a print or e-newsletter? An informative publication is a great way to stay in touch with your customers and leads. It also reinforces your expertise in your industry. You can give your readers tips and advice. You can also give them updates about company news and information about your products or services. Both can help drive repeat business to your website. It also reminds people that you are still available the next times they need your services or products. To generate your mailing list, start with your current customers, friends, associates, and vendors. Include a sign-up form on your website for print and/or electronic versions. Ask new customers if they would like to receive your newsletter. Organize your contacts using some kind of database software. Make sure you keep your list up to date. Over time, a newsletter establishes trust with your readers. You begin to form a relationship, even if youve never met face to face. Be there for your readers if they have questions, need advice, or want support. E-mail or call them back promptly. Ultimately, your publication will lead to more word-of-mouth business and referrals. Some advice: Keep the majority of your publication focused on advice and resources. If it is too sales oriented, people will be a LOT less interested in it. You will also lose some of your credibility and may be perceived as pushy. Make your newsletter fun, interesting, creative, and informative. Try organizing each issue around a theme. Develop a mailing schedule and stick to it. And, please go to a professional designer to help you with it, not your neighbors nephew who had a class in Design 101 Something or Other. Remember, you get what you pay for. If you dont invest in your marketing piece, it will look like it! ACTION ITEM: Today, start making plans to create an online or offline newsletter. If you already have one, is it being sent regularly? Does it need a facelift? Is the content interesting? Are you receiving positive feedback? Make sure your publication is creative and that its working effectively. Wendy Maynard, your friendly marketing maven, is the owner of Kinesis. How To Remove Black Hair Dye

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By Sarah Freeland Dying your hair black is one way to create a very dramatic look, and for many different types of skin tones black hair is flattering. However, if you dont naturally have very dark hair, it can be a big mistake to use permanent hair dye to dye your hair black. Black hair dye is one of the most difficult colors to remove from your hair. This is because the pigment is so saturated that it clings to your hair strands and it penetrates deep into the hair shaft. If you decide to change your hair color after dying it black it wont be as easy as simply applying a new hair color treatment. Removing black hair dye will usually need to start by bleaching out the black hair pigments. This will be a long process that has the potential to severely weaken your hair. As each layer of coloring is bleached away you will notice that your hair will change to various colors of red, orange and finally white. Once you reach a light shade you can then add hair coloring that is closer to your natural coloring. If you dont have a lot of experience with hair dye then you may want to go to a salon to remove the black coloring from your hair. They will not only be able to use professional strength bleaches and color removers, but they also will be able to treat and condition your hair after the harsh process of removing the coloring from your hair. In addition to bleaching products that you can buy from a supermarket or from a department store there are also products that are designed to remove hair color. Some of these products include Color Fix and Color Zap. Make sure that you read the instructions on these products carefully before you use them. The 10 Laws of Fat Loss!

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

By Russ Yeager Follow these 10 laws of fat loss and you are guaranteed a leaner physique. Think about it; not too many things in life are guaranteed. Often times we have to put a lot of work into something without knowing whether our effort will pay off in the end. This is just part of life, but with fat loss we know we will be successful as long as we have a solid plan in place and as long as we stick to that plan. The sticking to it is usually the part we have the most trouble with. It can be difficult to stay on a fat loss eating plan, but it becomes a little easier when you consistently remind yourself that a leaner you is right around the corner if you just stick with it. You are probably already familiar with some of these laws. If that is the case then now it is just a matter of bringing it all together and DOING IT! 1) You must create a slight calorie deficit in order to lose body fat. The most effective way to do this is to exercise and control the number of calories you ingest each day. Get use to knowing the number of calories that are contained in everything you eat. This is made easy for us with nutrition labels on store bought food and nutritional information sheets available at most fast food restaurants. 2) You must feed your body smaller meals every 2-3 hours throughout the day. Eating this way compared to the normal 3 meals a day increases your metabolic rate significantly. It also prevents you from ever getting too hungry, which is when you are most likely to go off of your nutrition plan and consume too many calories. 3) Every one of your small meals throughout the day should contain a source of high quality protein, carbohydrates, and good fat, with the exception of post workout meals, which should consist of fast digesting carbohydrates and proteins and very little or no fat. High quality meal replacements are a great way to supplement several of your meals during the day. 4) Drink enough water every single day. Having adequate water enables your body to function properly, including its ability to burn fat. Water also flushes toxins and impurities from the body. 5) Always incorporate weight training and cardiovascular exercise into your fat loss nutrition plan. 6) Use the power of vegetables to help you reach your goals. Vegetables are the most nutrient dense food around meaning that you can eat a tremendous quantity of vegetables and consume very few calories. The high fiber content of vegetables also causes your body to work very hard just to digest the vegetables, which means that the calories you do consume are all burned up just in the digestion process. So, in turn, vegetables are negative calories! If you get hungry you can always add more vegetables with no fear of hurting your fat loss efforts (Fried okra does not count!) 7) Pick a nutrition plan that you can live with and that you have faith in. If you cannot consistently follow a nutritional program then you will never have success with it. A good rule to remember is that any diet that you eventually come off of will fail in the long run. To have success you must incorporate a nutritional program that you can follow for the rest of your life. This requires a lifestyle change and commitment on your part. It is also important that you have faith and confidence in your fat loss nutrition program. If you do not truly believe that something is going to work for you, then you will not stick with it. 8) Cheat if you want to, but know the consequences of excessive overindulgence. Having a cheat day or cheat meal every week or every two week, in which you allow yourself to eat whatever food you are craving, is a great way to help you stick with your nutritional program. Cheat days give us a mental break and allow us to enjoy some of our favorite foods so that we do not feel deprived. However, dont fool yourself into thinking that your body needs these cheat days, and be careful of the quantity of food you eat on your cheat day. If your cheat meal turns into a full day of pigging-out on everything in sight then you can easily undo all of the hard work you put in the week before. 9) Keep your eye on the prize. Eating to lose body fat is tough. I am not going to lie and say it isnt. There will undoubtedly be times when you feel like giving up and accepting the fact that you can never achieve your ideal physique and level of health and fitness. When you feel like this take a couple of minutes to remind yourself exactly why you are doing it. Think of how awesome it is going to feel when you finally do reach your goals. Trust me, when you achieve your fat loss goals and reach a new level of health and fitness, it will be well-worth the sacrifice you had to make along the way. 10) Be consistent and never give up. Permanent fat loss requires a lifelong commitment to eating healthier and exercising. Dont become frustrated or give up if you do not seem to be reaching your goals as quickly as you would like. Achieving the body and level of fitness you desire takes time and consistency. If you mess up on your nutrition plan dont beat yourself up. Instead, get right back to it and keep making progress because with enough determination and desire you WILL eventually get there. Russ Yeager’s Health and Fitness 2006 All rights reserved. Baby Einstein Birthday Party: A Touch of Smarts and Fun

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Gail Leino Of all the ages for whom to arrange a birthday party, children under the age of five years probably pose the most challenge. The children in this age group typically have a short attention span and need to keep busy to remain content. A Baby Einstein birthday party can enable you to keep your guests entertained and create an enjoyable birthday celebration. A typical birthday party for children under the age of five years old typically lasts no more than a couple of hours. A puppet show can take up a considerable amount of time. The Baby Einstein puppets are characters that teach children as well as entertain them. The puppets interacting with the children through music and dancing can easily fulfill an hour of birthday celebration time. The remainder of the time could be fulfilled with the actual celebration. Young children often dont understand when one child receives a present and they dont. To avoid this possible catastrophe, it is a good idea to give all children who attend the party, a bag of goodies. Party shops typically offer packages that include decorations, plates and cups, and party favors. A Baby Einstein package can relieve you from having to shop at more than one location for your party goods. A Baby Einstein party package might include DVDs or music, in addition to dishes and decorations. Parties for young children rarely feature extravagant meals. Instead, the children eat snack foods, typically after theyve finished exerting energy. If you are serving cake at the Baby Einstein birthday party, you may want to have other snacks, such as cookies and candy. Nuts and fruit are excellent healthy alternatives to sweets. For a fancy cake, have characters from Baby Einstein decorated onto the cake. This kind of cake would be colorful and appealing to the young children attending the Baby Einstein party. A Beautiful Garden of Flowers

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Robert Roy You can make your garden of flowers the attraction of the neighborhood. As a gardener, knowing how to improve it can make the difference. The healthier your garden the better it will look. Usually a good looking garden will be a healthy garden. Here are simple ways to make your garden of flowers bloom more for your gardening heart’s content: 1. The essentials must always be given major consideration. Just like with any gardening endeavor, a garden of flowers must have its adequate supply of water, light, and fertile soil. To lack one of these gardening necessities is almost preparing the death bed of your garden flower. Water the garden of flowers more frequently during dry spells. Also, make sure that you plant the flower bulbs deep enough to provide sufficient room for the rooting. 2. Mix and match perennials with annuals. Perennial flower bulbs need not to be replanted since they grow and bloom for several years while annuals grow and bloom for only one season. Mixing a few perennials with annuals ensures that the show goes on with your garden. 3. Deadhead to encourage more blossoms. Deadheading is simply snipping off the flower head after it wilts. This will make the plant grow more and produce more flowers. Just make sure that you don’t discard the deadhead on the garden or mildew and other plant disease will attack your plants. 4. Know the good bugs from the bad bugs. Do you know that most garden insects do more good than harm? Butterflies, flies, beetles and bees are known as pollinators. They fertilize plants through unintentional transfer of pollen from one plant to another. And 80% of flowering plants rely on them for survival. Why do you think flowers are that colorful and pretty? Ill bet you thought it was to make humans more fond of them? It’s actually to lure more insects. Sowbugs and dung beetles together with fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms make the soil friendlier to plants. This is because they subsist on dead materials, breaking them into simpler molecules that fertilize the soil. These bugs are known as the ever trusty decomposers. Now you don’t just shoo away bugs whenever you see any. Choose your enemies. With loads of information in mind and practiced, your garden of flowers will surely thank you with a breath taking view when it’s time for them to bloom again. Hassle-free House Moves: Five Strategies For Success

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Sharon Hurley Hall During my childhood, almost no year was complete without a house move, and Im still a bit of a nomad. With 20 house moves in 25 years, Ive picked up a few tips to streamline the process. Here are five tips to make sure that the big day is smooth and painless. 1. Getting grounded Everything you move has to go through your front door, so it makes sense to have your belongings as close to the departure point as possible. That means getting all boxes and items down from the loft/attic (or up from the basement/cellar) before moving day. Most of the stuff in there you dont use every day anyway and can well do without for a few weeks. Put the boxes in room you can do without for a while (this is usually the dining room as you can eat off trays for a couple of weeks) and stack them three or four high, big boxes at the base, small ones at the top. 2. Name calling Label, label, label. Dont just label boxes by where theyre going; label where theyve come from as well. Youll have a much better idea of where to find that elusive vase for the welcome flowers the new neighbours have brought you, because youll know exactly where that was in the old house. Label boxes on the top and at least two sides (four if you cant be bothered to be careful about how theyre put down). That means you wont have to lift every box to find out whats in it. Make some signs for the new house (Bed1 Bed 2 etc) for rooms where there might be some confusion. Then your move-day helpers can easily find out where each box should go. Invest in a few thick black or dark blue marker pens (at least one for each of the main packers). With multi-coloured boxes you can write on the tape. 3. Holiday time? Use those empty suitcases to pack your folded clothes; the hanging ones can be transported over the back of a car seat. The carry on bags are great for packing a couple of essentials so you can have clean clothes that evening and the next day and take a tablet if the move has given you too much of a headache. 4. Back to basics Get together a move day essentials box. This should have a kettle and enough mugs for everyone whos helping you move, as well as coffee, tea and sugar (those packs you get at hotels are perfect) and a carton of UHT milk. A bottle of mineral water is also a good idea, as are a couple of snack bars and a roll of toilet paper. Another essentials box should have your hammer, drill, screwdriver set as well as a few nails, screws and wall plugs. A couple of light bulbs may also come in handy, as will a roll of bin bags and some large dust sheets in case its a wet day (you dont want mud all over the new carpet, do you?) 5. Food frenzy On move day you should take your perishables out of the fridge and box it up. Leave the food thats in the freezer; thats where its safest. As long as the freezer door stays shut, you should be able to move the fridge and plug it in again without any losses. Of course, if it will take several hours to get to your new home, maybe you should empty the freezer in the weeks before move day. And take this chance to throw out any out of date foodstuffs. Final thoughts If you do all this, you should have a relatively hassle free move. Of course that wont stop the movers from double booking themselves, or the previous tenants from leaving a full skip in the driveway, but at least youll have sorted the elements you can control. Massachusetts Marriage License Requirements

Friday, February 1st, 2008

By Yolanda Nash You are really anxious for your wedding to happen. You live in the state of Massachusetts, however you are not sure how to apply and obtain your marriage license. Well do not worry that is what I am here for. Below I have outlined the latest laws and regulations for applying and obtaining a marriage license in the state of Massachusetts. You must bring a government issued picture identification and social security card. You do not have to reside in the state of Massachusetts to apply and obtain a marriage license. The couple must appear together to apply for marriage license. If you have been previously married you do not need to bring proof, however you must be certain that you are no longer married. The waiting period is three days and Sundays and holidays are included in the three days. You can also get the waiting period waived - According to MGL Ch. 207:30, if both parties are residents, or non-residents, or one of each, and they need to dispense with the three days, they may do so by applying to the judge of a probate or district court to have the license issued without delay, after filing intentions with the clerk. The fees for the license are $4 or more to be paid with cash Only. The state statute stipulates a fee of $4 for the license but it allows cities and towns by a vote of their city councils, boards of selectmen or town meeting, or by a change in the by-laws, to set their own fee. A medical certificate is necessary for each of you unless you obtain a request in writing from a member of the clergy or attending physician stating that the woman is near the termination of her pregnancy or the death of either party is imminent. You may obtain medical certificates from any physician licensed to practice in Massachusetts. You can marry if you are under the age of 18. You should have your birth certificate to show proof of your age. Yes, it is possible for a non-minister or non-justice of the peace (such as a relative or family friend) to obtain special permission to perform a marriage from the Governor. You should check with your local clerk to see if they accept same sex marriages. Ordained ministers of the gospel may perform marriages. Before performing marriages, ministers are required to apply for a certificate from the state. The marriage license is valid for sixty days and can only be used in the state of Massachusetts. These are the latest laws and regulations for applying and obtaining a marriage license in the state of Massachusetts. I suggest that you call your local clerk to confirm the information above.
