By David Ben-Ariel The Two Witnesses of Revelation 11. Who are these two prophets? What do they have to say? Why are they called the two witnesses? How will their message be proclaimed? And is there any special significance to the fact that they’re headquartered in Jerusalem? God’s Church has often wondered about these things, but we ALL need to know the answers to these vital questions, especially since the two witnesses will soon make their debut upon the world stage! Even as the United Europe is being raised up before our very eyes, just as Herbert W. Armstrong said it would, isn’t it reasonable that God is raising up the two witnesses who will testify against it? And even as God’s Church is approaching the end of their great commission (Herbert W. Armstrong took the gospel around the world, the Church must warn the world), isn’t it only reasonable that the two witnesses should be beginning theirs? (John 3:30). Didn’t Isaiah foresee this very event when he prophesied of the “night when no man can work,” but assures us of two whom God would simultaneously raise up to impart their light? (Isaiah 60:1-2). It appears that the full power and glory of Elijah’s office isn’t to be fulfilled until AFTER God’s Church has been removed to “her place” and a double portion of God’s Spirit is transferred to our successor - the two witnesses! (Revelation 12:14; 2 Kings 2:9). God states that He shall station watchmen in Jerusalem. Why? For the purpose of comforting His captive Church and Israelite people. How will they be comforted? By the ASSURANCE that our God will come and save us and avenge us of our enemies (Isaiah 62:6-7; 40:1; 35:3-4)! The specific commission and anointing of the two witnesses is clearly recorded in Isaiah 61:1-2. Remember your Roots Malachi 4:5-6 further reveals that they are to PREPARE THE NATION of Israel for the Coming of our King, by a baptism of repentance that will prepare them to receive the Holy Spirit (which is to be poured out at Christ’s return). That national preparation is only possible if Israel’s heart is turned back to the heart of our fathers (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob), and then, in turn, our hearts must be turned back to the GOD of our fathers and His TRUE religion. Presently there’s a “generation gap” between the fathers and us because the true religion demands obedience to the Law of God. Abraham recognizes only the obedient as his legal heirs (Genesis 18:19; John 8:39; Galatians 3:29). And since we’re a rebellious nation and people (Isaiah 30:9), Abraham refuses to acknowledge us (Isaiah 63:16; Hosea 5:7; 6:7). If Israel dares to reject this necessary “family reunion” that would direct us to our Heavenly Father, God will be forced to destroy all rebellious life from off the face of the earth. Why? Because Israel is God’s national firstborn and the law demands death to stubborn sons (Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Malachi 4:6)! God realizes that if Israel can’t be saved, then no nation can. The continued existence of Israel is vital to the survival of ALL nations, because Israel is the national salt as the Church of God is the spiritual salt! By Joseph Perrello The theology of the Apostle Paul emphasizes that mankind possesses the vestiges of an instinctive awareness of God, an innate realization that humanity owes an obligation to Him; an awareness that has been incorporated within man at creation. Moreover, the Apostle writes in chapter one of his letter to the Romans, since earliest times, men were able to discern God’s existence and eternal power by the things He created. Though aware of these things, they refused to retain the true knowledge of God in their minds or admit their obligation to Him, preferring instead, to invent ridicules ideas of what God was like and how they should serve Him. Mankind deliberately refused to acknowledge God as He really is, Paul wrote. They knew the reality about Him, but refused to worship Him in truth. Because they chose to believe lies, God released them to their own corrupt devices. He permitted humanity to reap the results of its own reprobate thinking. Men created and worshiped their own gods; gods made to resemble birds, animals, snakes and humans; the things God has created. As a result, Paul stated, at the Judgment Day, when men stand before God, they will have no valid excuse for not having followed the truth, since they once knew it and deliberately chose not to follow it. I. Men find it impossible to divest themselves of the need to worship something. The awareness of the spiritual realm is universally innate in humanity; it always has been a part of the human psyche. While some do not recognize its lesser manifestations, the need to worship is a part of us all. In his book, “Primitive Religions,” published in 1891, Professor G.T. Bettany recorded that, though some tribes may be without a higher sense of religion, few, if any, do not believe in spiritual beings of some kind. Charles Darwin in his “Descent of Man,” (vol i; p. 143) also noted this tendency in the human race. He wrote, “If . . . we include in the term ‘religion’ the belief in unseen or spiritual agencies . . . this belief seems to be universal with the less civilized races.” The animist’s fear that spiritual beings inhabit natural objects and must be appeased, the dread that the spirits of the dead must be worshiped to prevent them from harming the living, the worship of the spirits in the powers of nature, the belief of totemism that certain animals and plants must be respected to refrain them from injuring humans, the rituals of sorcery, shamanism, witchcraft and numerous other formulas, are religious practices utilized by primitives seeking to control the gods before whom they feel a sense of guilt. These practices bear witness that even remote tribes possess vestiges of an awareness of the existence of God, and sense that mankind has offended Him; and therefore an obligation is due Him. True, this perception of a deity whom men have offended is corrupted, but it is nevertheless real. The physician Luke dramatically illustrated the deep-rooted, intrinsic fear in the human psyche that the gods are displeased with men and must be appeased, during his travels with the Apostle Paul. While in Athens, he and the Apostle noticed idols everywhere. An altar bearing the plaintive inscription, To the unknown god, especially caught their attention. The Athenians feared that, in their ignorance, they might have neglected to appease a god unknown to them. In an effort to diminish the risks of incurring his wrath - should such a god exist they fashioned an altar. No doubt suitable ritual practices were concocted. It was a pathetic attempt to control the unknown god and bend him to their will, though the Athenians never could be sure they had succeeded. The account is a typical example of the insecurity felt by those who have not learned the revealed nature of the true God. It is precisely this lack of understanding that generates profound terror in them. Men do not know God, but have a deep-rooted sense of guilt toward Him, so they fear Him.In their fear they attempt to manipulate Him.*****II.”A formula is something that worked once, and keeps trying to do it again.” (Henry S. Haskins; “Family Word Finder,” Readers Digest, page 322.) Since the beginning of the apostasy, men have invented practices by which they endeavor to place human restrictions on God. Our society has fallen heir to this propensity in our race. As a result, the field of religion in our generation has become a hotbed of religious formulas that endeavor to shrink God to human proportions. Whole cults have proliferated around such formulas. In Christianity, denominations have split over them. In the past few generations, such tactics have devastated the American church. Originally, with humanity’s rejection of truth in the infancy of our race, the practice of mankinds need to worship took simple forms the adoration of idols, animals, potentates, sun, moon, and planets, et cetera, endeavoring to control or manipulate these gods, by inventing religious formulas for that purpose. Although this rudimentary idolatry is still practiced in some communities, among “civilized” peoples, the modern endeavor to control the true God manifests a more sophisticated expression. Until descending into disgrace, several televangelist pervaded the screen with their name-it-and-claim-it ballyhoos, which is nothing more than the proclamation that men can control God and bend Him to their will by simply naming their desires and claiming it already accomplished. By their doing this, God supposedly was compelled to grant these desires. However, God is not an infinite vending machine; we cannot insert a claimed desire, say we believe it to be accomplished, and out pops that which we claimed. Neither will God consent to being controlled by men formulas not withstanding. “Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2). By Darrell Feltmate Wood turners as a group tend to be people who appreciate the out of doors, whether it be to walk in the woods as pure enjoyment of nature or a search for the wood that makes a treasure yet to be seen. Such a turn of enjoyment also tends to make the turner of wood into a person who appreciates a summer garden with its blooms and foliage of myriad colors. How then, might one integrate the two? Wood has long had its place in the garden. The earliest tools were made of wood whether the handle or blade of a shovel or trowel. Many gardens are edged with wood either in the form of rounds from a trunk, boards laid as brick or the more modern railroad tie given new life as garden surround. The fascination with raised bed gardening in recent times has only added to the use of week as border and edging. Moreover, who could forget the fascination of peering through the wooden pickets of the old fence into the forbidden world of the neighbor’s garden when one was merely a lad or lass, thinking of the first strawberry of the season? Even for something as simple a planting tool, the wood turner may step forward. These days a trowel of metal and plastic is the norm while only a few short years ago a gardener would have used a wooden dibber, sometimes called a dibble, to get the seeds and bulbs in place. Certainly no English gardener would be found without one. There are still a few places where one can purchase a dibber, and organic gardeners have become once again champions of these simple tools of wood, but for the turner they are a simple project and can be made to fit one’s hand. A piece of suitable wood such as maple or ash is placed on the lathe and turned round. A handle of about four inches is turned at one end and then the other is given an elegant curve to a blunt point. For the purposes of later planting, particularly of bulbs, a series of rings is etched along the curve with the pint of a skew, about an inch apart. These serve as depth gages to ensure that seeds and bulbs are planted to the correct depth. Usually a dibber is used in well prepared garden soil. Either it is used to lightly scratch a line for planting small seeds or inserted a bit deeper for the large ones. It is at bulb planting it excels. For a bulb to be planted three inches deep as for instance in the case of a gladioli, the dibber is plunged to a depth of four inches as indicated by its depth lines. This allows for later infilling of the hole by a bit of dirt and leaving the three inch depth required by the bulb. In fact the hole tends to fill up with earth, especially in good, well tilled ground, and this discourages many who do not know the trick to a dibber to conclude that it is no good. In fact, it is merely necessary to insert the tool and rotate it in a small circle to the circumference of the bulb to leave the proper hole with lightly packed earth on the sides. A bulb is inserted into the hole and the dibber plunged immediately beside it and rocked back and forth. As the dibber is removed it backfills over the bulb and leaves a hole for watering that will gradually be filled with earth from the gentle erosion of the summer rains. As one uses a dibber in the garden from the hand of the wood turner it is not hard to realize that we have joined the ranks of gardeners from yesteryear in carefully planting for the future. By Sue And Chuck DeFiore It amazes me, how often during a week, I hear “It’s not my fault, it’s not my responsibility”. It seems that in today’s society no one wants to take responsibility for anything. Parents don’t or won’t take the responsibility of how their children turn out. It’s the daycare’s fault, the school’s fault, the college’s fault, the cop’s fault, … you get the picture. As far as children go today, newsflash parents, “It is your fault.” They are your children, not the daycare’s or the schools. It is your responsibility to be sure that they get to school, that they learn in school, and what they do after school. That means paying attention to what your children are doing. Taking an interest in the homework they have, and if they don’t have any, giving them some. Monitoring what kind of music they listen to, what they watch on television, what kind of movies they watch, and the video games they play. Teaching them the difference between reality and imaginary ideas, people and things. Television and video games are not baby-sitters, and neither is the school system. Your children are your responsibility, and in all honesty if you don’t have the time to spend with your children, then don’t have them. I fully realize that both parents have to work today because of the cost of things. However, there are parents raising children who are aware of what their children are doing, spend time with them, and instill in them ethics, morals and values so that their children can become productive adults. Unfortunately, these parents appear to be few and far between. Teachers, your job is to teach our children. The crying about class size doesn’t cut it. When I attended school we had a minimum of 30 students in most classes, and teachers taught and we all passed our Regents exams before graduating high school. Unfortunately, while I was in college I could see the writing on the wall already regarding our education system. Those who were going into teaching only had to pass/fail classes such as psychology, sociology, and learning theory classes; and they couldn’t even do that. Our education system has gone downhill since the mid 70’s. Yes, there are still some good teachers out there, those in their 40’s and up. However, we have teachers today that can’t read and write, so how can we expect them to teach our children to do so. Some of the teachers today are afraid of being tested on a yearly basis, and many of them should be, because they would not pass. The standards for testing today are a joke. I would love to give a Regents Exam test from a high school in the 50’s, 60’s, and even early 70’s. Both the students and the teachers today wouldn’t pass. I know I am making a lot of people angry, and you should be. The fault lies with our educational system. It has disintegrated over the years. Too many other factors have come into play in our school system. This is something that should not have happened. In order to get good teachers, children and parents have to respect them, and unfortunately today that is not the case. When I was attending school, we respected our teachers and our principals. Over the years we’ve let government, vocal parental groups, legislators and the legal system dictate how we raise our children. Why? Because then we can use the mantra, “It’s not my fault, it’s not my responsibility”. People today are to quick to abdicate responsibility to everyone but themselves. One of the biggest problems are all the frivolous lawsuits out there. Children taking their parents to court. Parents suing companies because of hot coffee, a hot pickle. These cases get too much attention and unbelievably juries that give out awards. The media perpetuates many of the problems today. By focusing so much attention on the people that do harm to others, more individuals out there figure if they want attention they need to do the same. This becomes a vicious cycle, and teaches our children the wrong way to accomplish things. So, how do we fix it. We all take responsibility for our actions. We don’t abdicate our responsibility. We admit we are human, we make mistakes, and move forward from there. Try and I mean really try not to make the same mistakes over and over.
